The holiday season is a time when most people are happy and cheerful, but when the New Year approaches, there seems to be a slight decline in happiness; and then there is a plateau. There several reasons that your happiness can decline throughout the year; let’s explore.

You aren’t spending as much time with your family. Not being in touch with certain friends and family members can affect your mood and state of mind throughout the year. After all, they are your family, and in typical cases, the bond is strong. If you’ve historically had issues with spending time with your family, change the tradition and make time. Reach out to those who help create happiness in you throughout the year; you may be creating their happiness as well.

You overspent during the holidays. We get it. Your heart was in the right place. You wanted to spread holiday cheer and get good gifts for those you love. But now, you realize it set you back financially and you have missed a few bill payments. To avoid getting caught up next year, start a tradition of purchasing gifts in the summertime. That way by the time winter comes, you have gradually completed your holiday shopping without breaking the bank.

You think happiness is only for the holidays. They say that holidays are the, “most wonderful time of the year,” but your entire year can be wonderful if you will it to be that way. Things happen, changes occur, but your quality of life is diminished when there is no happiness in it. You may miss loved ones who are no longer here, but being unhappy about their absence, instead of celebrating the time you had with them, only keeps you from your purpose life – and that is to be genuinely happy and create happiness in the lives of others.

At day’s end, your happiness is not only important, but necessary to lead an emotionally healthy life. If life’s circumstances and events are weighing you down, don’t be afraid to seek professional help.  A therapist or other professional can help you cope with your feelings and ensure that you go through the New Year as an improved, happier you!
